How Some 2025 Laws Will Effect Your Wallet

MN 2025 Laws and how it effects our wallet

You know that feeling when you’re about to buy concert tickets, and suddenly the price doubles with mysterious fees? Trust me, I’ve been there. CURSE YOU TICKETMASTER! Or when someone is hunting for that new job, but can’t figure out if the salary will actually cover your bills? It’s always shrouded in mystery or is such a wide range who knows where you’ll land. Here’s some somewhat good news as there are some changes coming in 2025 that’ll make these issues and some more easier.

As someone who’s spent years navigating the complexities of personal finance (and occasionally getting burned by hidden fees), I’m genuinely excited about some of these new laws. Let’s break down what’s changing and how it affects your wallet.

The End of “Surprise” Fees

I had posted earlier last year about the administration that was trying to rid us of all those “junk fees” or charges we see everywhere. We run into this all the time when trying to buy tickets to see our favorite artists or events. Let’s say the advertised price was $75, but somehow I ended up paying nearly $130 after all the fees. Sound familiar? Well, those days are coming to an end in 2025, thanks to two major changes.

First, there’s the new “Ticketing Fairness Act” requires something called “all-in pricing.” In plain English? No confusion legal speak. Even people like me will be able to understand what it costs, and where my money is going. The price you see is the price you’ll actually pay. No more mysterious convenience fees or processing charges appearing at checkout. Finally! Plus, the law tackles all those annoying bots that scoop up all the good seats before real fans can get them, and then scalp them on the wicked inflated resale sites.

But it’s not just concert tickets. The crackdown on “junk fees” extends to pretty much everything. Businesses now have to show all mandatory fees and additional charges upfront when advertising prices. No more surprises when you’re checking out at restaurants, booking hotels, or buying services. We’ve all been burned by hidden fees more times than we care to admit, this feels like a major win for our wallets. Now I know many have said that this will mean prices will increase and fees will be baked into the costs of the services. Over time that may begin to happen, but I do feel this is a win for consumers and a step in the right direction.

Job Hunting Just Got More Transparent

Here’s something that would have saved job seekers countless hours of frustration during their last job searches. Employers must now include much more detailed salary ranges and benefit information in their job postings. No more applying for jobs, going to interviews, only to discover the salary is half what you need!

This change isn’t just about convenience – I this is also about financial planning. When you are job seeking and know the salary range upfront, you can make better decisions about your career moves and budget accordingly. We can also more effectively, and fairly compare employment offers as well. Plus, this transparency helps us level the playing field we we are negotiating salary. Knowledge really is power!

Minimum Wages Earning More In 2025

Minnesota is also adapting its minimum wage landscape to better support workers’ financial well-being. Starting January 1, 2025, the state is simplifying things by implementing a unified minimum wage of $11.13 per hour across all employer categories. This is interesting because it actually eliminates the previous distinction between large and small employers.

For those just starting their career journey (kids under 20 years old), there’s a new training wage of $9.08 per hour for the first 90 days of employment – think of of this as kinda like stepping stone into the workforce.

For workers in Minneapolis and St. Paul – these cities are charting their own course with higher minimum wages. In both Minneapolis and St. Paul, many workers will see their minimum wage rise to $15.97 per hour. This applies to employees at large employers in Minneapolis and macro employers (more than 10,000 employees) in St. Paul, as well as small Minneapolis employers and large St. Paul employers. St. Paul has created an additional tier, with smaller employers required to pay $15 per hour and micro employers, or those with 5 or fewer employees, $12.25.

New Renter Protections for Your Home and Wallet

Over 35% of the population are renters. That’s almost 103 million renters in the US. I know how vulnerable or helpless renters can sometimes feel. The new laws for 2025 bring some serious protection for renters in the state of Minnesota. I’m a landlord and provide quality, maintained housing at fair and reasonable rates across the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.  I absolutely feel we need to allow protections for renters from the “slumlords” that are taking advantage of renters.

  • Renters can now legally form tenant associations (strength in numbers!)
  • Protection from retaliation if renters report code violations or speak up about conditions
  • Landlords will not be able increase rent or decrease services as punishment for organizing
  • Any and each violation can cost landlords $1,000 plus any legal fees

These changes mean renters can fight for better living conditions without fear of your rent suddenly skyrocketing.

Affordable Life-Saving Medication

This one is so important for many that needs life-saving medications. Things like asthma medications, diabetic insulin, and EpiPens used to treat allergic emergencies. Starting in 2025, a new Minnesota law puts a cap on copays for these crucial medications.

  • Insulin, asthma inhalers, and EpiPens: $25/month maximum
  • Medical supplies (like syringes and test strips): $50/month maximum

For families struggling with chronic conditions, this isn’t just a financial change – it truly is life-changing. No one should have to choose between breathing or insulin vs buying groceries or paying a utility bill.

These changes represent a significant shift toward consumer protection and financial transparency. While they might seem like small tweaks, they add up to real savings and better financial planning opportunities for all of us.

Remember, knowledge is our best financial tool. Keep these changes in mind as you navigate your money decisions in 2025. And hey, keep those horns up and maybe use some of those savings from hidden fees to boost your emergency fund
