I had recently talked about the value in a two-year, associates degree. A four-year degree isn’t right for everybody, not to mention the crazy rising cost of tuition! I had known of free tuition program floating around the Minnesota legislature for a while. Thanks to my cousin, who let me know the program is now in place! If you are a Minnesota resident looking for a college education but dreading the mountain of debt that often accompanies a typical degree? Good news is here with the Minnesota Community College Associates Degree Free Tuition program, what we call the North Star Promise. Scheduled to kick off this Fall in the 2024-25 academic year, this groundbreaking initiative promises to make higher education accessible and way more affordable, a game changer especially for families earning less than $80,000 per year.
The Nuts and Bolts of the North Star Promise
The North Star Promise isn’t just a scholarship—it’s a lifeline for prospective students whose dreams are bigger than their wallets. This program is crafted as a “last-dollar” scholarship, which means it covers any remaining tuition and fees after other forms of gift aid, like scholarships and grants, are applied. Simply put, it fills in the financial gaps that other aids may leave, ensuring a completely tuition-free education.
Who’s Eligible?
This isn’t just for fresh high school grads. The program casts a wide net, embracing new students, returning learners, and anyone in between—no age limits! Even old, retired nerds like me! You just need to be a Minnesota resident attending a state university, community college, or two-year college. Another cool things about the North Star Promise lies in its inclusivity, opening doors for many who thought college was out of reach due to financial constraints.

Persistence pays off with the North Star Promise. Continuation of the scholarship hinges on meeting your institution’s Satisfactory Academic Progress standards such as maintaining a GPA, and completing a minimum number credits. For those looking at a two-year degree, you can receive benefits for up to 60 credits, and even up to 120 credits for a four-year stint. This feature ensures that students can not only start their educational journey but also have the continued support to finish it.
Funding and Future
Initial funding for the program is robust, to the tune of approximately $120 million, with annual costs projected around $50 million thereafter. It’s designed to support around 15,000 students each year—a significant boost to college accessibility in the state.
Why It Matters
This isn’t only about making college affordable, it’s about leveling the educational playing field for thousands of Minnesotans. In a landscape where higher education increasingly dictates career paths and earning potentials, removing financial barriers is a bold step towards inclusivity and diversity in higher education sectors. It also strategically positions Minnesota as a leader in educational reform, likely prompting other states to follow suit in the quest to dismantle the financial barriers to college education.
Another Perspective
I do understand there are some who might label this as a veer towards socialism, or question why they should be paying for others’ education. I get it. I’m not into constant government hand-outs. However I do think that by ensuring that more citizens have access to higher education, Minnesota is investing in a smarter, more capable workforce. This isn’t just an expenditure—it’s can be investment in the state’s economic future. This can be the catalyst that helps those start and reboot their career.
The North Star Promise is more than just a financial aid program—it’s a commitment to the state’s future. Around 75% of our most recent graduates stay in Minnesota. This adds to the quality of the state’s workforce and tax base. This program is about telling every Minnesotan that college isn’t just a dream for the financially fortunate. This is a attainable goal for anyone with the ambition to reach it. So, get ready, Minnesota—your future just got a lot brighter.
This isn’t merely a program; it’s a promise. A promise of opportunity, growth, and a belief in the potential of every resident. If you’re planning to or pondering whether to attend college in Minnesota, the North Star Promise might just be your ticket to a debt-free degree. Why not take that chance?
