Why do I aspire to be financially independent? Why do any of us pursue financial freedom? How far would you go for financial freedom? This is the question that author and filmmaker, Scott Rieckens, hopes to answer. Scott captures the truths and dispels the myths of the growing culture known as FIRE: Financial Independence Retire Early. His documentary film Playing with FIRE, is his crazy year-long journey, along with his wife Taylor and toddler Jovie, as they trek across the country in search of answers.

Continuing to live on very little, and save as much as they can, Scott and his family continue to pursue FIRE, while having time to spend with their daughter and do things that matter. This was the turning point for Taylor, Scott’s wife, in that she was sacrificing what little time she had to spend with her daughter and family while working long hours in her previous job. There had to be a better way!
Scott had the opportunity film, meet and listen to captivating stories from personalities who have helped people understand money’s effect has on our society. As well as guide so many down the path of financial freedom. Individuals from Mr. Money Mustache, who retired at the age of 30. And, Vicki Robin, who co-authored Your Money Or Your Life: 9 Steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence.
Scott’s mission with the film is to inspire people to ask themselves, “Can I do better?” Or, “What is my financial wellness, and is it healthy?” Scott states that “Financial literacy is more important than ever. It’s time to share the FIRE framework with the world.” I couldn’t agree more. As I’ve stated in other HMM posts, the school debt crisis is out of control and consumerism is something that we need to get a grip on. It does seem that many people participate in retail therapy for EVERYTHING. Either it’s to cope, or to celebrate, or to process many other emotions. We feel that buying this ‘THING’ will make me feel better. I’ve done it. And then I feel like crap afterward.
Scott and his crew launched a Kickstarter campaign in September of 2018 with efforts to get his film made, and within 48 hours they hit 25% of their funding goal.
With over a thousand backers it was one of the highest funded documentaries of 2018 I was backer #767, pledging back in October of 2018.
I’m proud to be presenting the Playing with FIRE Documentary film presentation just outside the Minneapolis area. This is a wonderful opportunity to come and meet others who may already be living a FIRE lifestyle or perhaps invite your partner, friend, or spouse. It can help answer questions, and continue the discussion on if you want to pursue the FIRE lifestyle.
